why you need a candle wick trimmer

At St Louis Candle Co, we are dedicated to educating our customers about proper candle maintenance.

Here is some candle science for you! When a candle is lit, the wax evaporates faster than the wick burns, meaning after every 4 hour burn, you are left with more wick than wax. This is why trimming your wicks is essential for burning a candle. It can make all the difference in how long your candle burns, what kind of flame it produces, how clean the wax appears, and eliminating black smoke.

what is a wick trimmer?

A wick trimmer is a smooth and durable candle trimmer that is designed to make trimming wicks easier than traditional scissors. A wick trimmer provides a clean cut of the wick while recovering the leftover debris. The cut piece of wick will sit right on the top of the end, so it's easy to remove without turning the candle upside down.

Wick trimmers are long enough and the right shape to get into most candle jars, which is very convenient!

the importance of your wick trimmer

Sometimes burning a candle generates an overwhelming smokey scent and not enough of its aroma escapes to fill up space in the room, which can happen if the wick is left untrimmed over time!

  • Wick trimmers will help your wicks burn cleaner.

  • Wick trimmers will keep smoke from staining the candle’s container.

  • Wick trimmers create a shorter wick, which will allow for better fragrance diffusion and enhance the scents while burning.

  • Wick trimmers help sustain the wicks and prevent the build-up of carbon.

our expert tips about wick trimming

Do not cut the wick of a burning candle. The wax that holds the flame together melts at a certain temperature, causing you to risk burning yourself or pushing the wick out of position.

  • When cutting the wick, bring the blades towards the wick, parallel to the wax. Place the wick trimmer handle inside the rim of the jar when making your cut.

  • Cut the wick to a height of about 4/5 mm.

  • Be sure to throw away the wick debris. Do not leave the debris inside the candle. (This makes the wax dirty!)

why are scissors bad for wick trimming?

Trimming candle wicks is a tricky task for scissors. The blades are too thick and their structure makes trimming difficult. The scissors were just not designed to handle trimming candle wicks.

A scissor’s blade shape doesn’t allow easy access inside the deeper parts of a jar. It is very common for the wax to stick to the sides of the wick. When cutting with scissors, the wax may stick to your scissors leaving a mess on your blades.

Scissors are not designed to hold the wick when cutting. You will find yourself frustrated from dropping the debris into the candle wax.
